Jocelyn and Perry Olum at 30 months

Jocelyn weighed 32 lb. (83rd percentile). Her recumbent length was 35" (31st percentile) and standing she measured 34 1/2" (27th percentile). Perry weighed 38 lb. (percentile 98.5) and measured 36 3/4" (66th percentile) lying down and 36" (55th percentile) standing up. Our impressions are that both children are taller than these percentiles indicate.

Jocelyn and Perry continue generally healthy, although Jocelyn had a cold with a mild fever for most of a week, and a stomach bug. She seems to be somewhat more sensitive than Perry.

They eat a wide variety of foods in amounts ranging from nothing to an adult size portion. Jocelyn's favorite is pizza. Tofu is still very popular.

They go to sleep typically between 10 and 11 p.m. and wake up between 6 and 7 a.m. They are back to napping nearly every day, for 2 hours or so. We don't let Perry nap longer than this because it leads to his staying up late at night.

While we still have childproofing fences, they are only advisory. Both children can climb over them.

Jocelyn can ride a tricycle, as long as the ground is flat. Perry is just learning.

Jocelyn has essentially the language of an adult. Her pronunciation is that of a 2-year-old, however. She often says "k" for "t", especially at the beginnings of words, and she says "y" for "l". Perry says "w" for "l" and "r", and "zh" for "y". "Do you want to read this book?" "Zhes!" He is improving his communication skills, but it is still sometimes difficult to get a straight answer to a simple question. Perry is mostly confused about "I" and "you", but sometimes gets it right. Jocelyn understands this issue perfectly, including understanding that Perry has it backwards.

We guess that Perry has memorized more than 500 poems, including "Phoebe's revolt", which is about 1300 words long. He also knows hundreds of children's books. Reciting books and poems is his favorite activity. Jocelyn also knows books and poems, but at a more normal level. She likes to look through a book and make up a story about the pictures she sees.

Jocelyn likes to draw, especially on the computer. Her drawings are sometimes deliberately representational, such as putting eyes in a face. She also identifies the things that she's drawn afterward as looking like one thing or another. If there are larger and smaller parts of a drawing, typically the larger are mom and the smaller are children.

We gave them an old computer and they love "interactive books". Jocelyn is pretty much able to use it by herself, but Perry is missing some essential skills such as releasing the mouse button.

Perry continues to like playing the piano. He also likes drawing, but mostly that consists of his telling a parent what to draw.

Perry has trouble with transitions. Even if he's finished with an activity, it's hard for him to give it up and go on to something else. Sometimes he finishes eating, climbs down from his chair by himself, and starts crying because he "wasn't done".

Jocelyn and Perry are slowly interacting more and more. Perry says things like "Jocelyn wants to swing" meaning, presumably, that he wants her to swing. He gets upset when she doesn't actually want to do it. Sometimes they have discussions with each other.
