Jocelyn and Perry Olum at 3 months

Jocelyn is 12 lbs, 12 oz fully fed, which puts her in the 65th percentile of weight for U.S. girls of her age. Pretty good considering how small she was at birth! She is about 23 inches long, which is 36th percentile, so she is getting back on track from her original small size. For her length, her weight is in the 77th percentile.

Perry is 13 lbs, 12 oz, which puts him in the 62nd percentile of weight for U.S. boys of his age. The one pound weight difference is typical of the difference between boys and girls at this age. He is 23 7/8 inches long, which is 46th percentile. For his length, his weight is in the 65th percentile.

In other words, we have statistically typical children.

Both Jocelyn and Perry can lift their weight using their legs if you steady them. They have no idea of balance, and mostly stand on their tiptoes. Perry is wobblier than Jocelyn. Perry likes to jump up and down standing in your lap. On the other hand, when lying facedown they cannot lift themselves with their arms. They can lift their heads to about 45 degrees.

Both of them are interested in objects and will "reach" for them in the sense that they wave the hand nearest the object. If you help them get their hand around the object, they will sometimes move it around a bit and occasionally bring it to their mouth.

Both of them smile often, both at people and for no obvious reason. Both of them can make a wide variety of cooing sounds, and Perry is quite conversational and will "talk" to you for a long time.

They typically go to bed about 10:30 p.m., although Perry has often been asleep for a while and we wake him up for a last nursing to get them synchronized. They usually go 4 to 6 hours before nursing again but they often wake up during that time and Valerie soothes them back to sleep. Then they nurse for half an hour or so and sleep for another 2 hours or so.
