[SOS-Boston] Alcohol week on campus, + Buddhism
Hi everyone,
As everyone here knows (I think), alcohol is a huge issue on college campuses, resulting in 1800 deaths annually among college students (according to NIH), and countless other incidents of rape, assaults, vandalism, etc.
What some might not know is the extent to which many colleges are being proactive in helping to educate students about AOD use and abuse. Northeastern has an office called OPEN (Office of Prevention and Education at Northeastern) that leads the effort here. They host many events (and inform many students) throughout the year, but their big week, called Alcohol Week, is coming up Oct 19-23. I've attached a flyer in case you want to see the messaging to students, or in case you're in the area and want to stop by.
One of the bigger events of Alcohol Week that some of you might be interested in is hosted by Dharma Punx...I'm not a Buddhist (or a punk rocker), but this is how the event was described to me:
The Dharma Punx Guided Meditation event will
feature members of the Boston chapter of Dharma Punx, a group of practicing
Buddhists who are heavily influenced by punk rock (http://www.dharmapunx.com).
Members of the group will share how Buddhism has helped them in their recovery,
provide information on their group, and lead
a guided meditation.
Ive also attached the ad for that event.
Just thought I'd let know these things are happening. Hope you all have a nice weekend...for those in recovery, let me know how you're doing if you get a minute.
Thanks.
Neal
