Physics Theorynet Meeting, October 17, 2020 Virtual place on Zoom MINUTES -------- Attending: Tim Fitzgibbon, Dr. William W Henderson Inclusion School, Dorchester Scott Goelzer, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy NH Michael Hirsh, Needham HS Nicole Preiser, Burr & Burton Academy, Manchester VT Mike Wadness, Medford HS Jim Halverson, Northeastern University Brent Nelson, Northeastern University Ken Olum, Tufts University Jesse Thaler, MIT Tomasz Taylor, Northeastern University We welcome two new teachers, Nicole Preiser from Burr & Burton Academy in Manchester VT and Tim Fitzgibbon from Dr. William W Henderson Inclusion School in Dorchester. In the introductory discussion, teachers described how they are handling on-line teaching. The main problem is student participation. On the other hand, remote format offers a great opportunity for Theorynet
class visits far beyond Boston area, to VT, NH and RI. There were several excellent suggestions how to enrich student experience. Among them: 1. Faculty remain on Zoom after visiting classes to talk with students one-on-one in breakout rooms; hold an "office hour" later that day or on the following one 2. Joint multi-college open house co-hosted by physics faculty from Northeastern, MIT, Harvard, Brandeis and Tufts (and BU maybe? :):). Teachers, please decide what would be the best TIME/DATE (please propose
2 TWO dates) and get back to Tom who will organize it. 3. The new NSF AI Institute directed by Jesse Thaler will be involved in outreach activities (Brent Nelson is the coordinator). AI could team up with Theorynet by bringing faculty working in data science,
a subject of high interest among high school students. We made the following pairings: Michael in Needham - Ken Mike in Medford - Brent Nicole - Tom Tim - Jim Scott - TBA More pairings will be made later.
Teachers who did not attend the meeting, please contact Tom who will arrange a visit with one of the faculty. Faculty who did not participate, please contact Tom who will pair you. The next meeting will take place in early January. |
