[Palindrome] good news about cell phone, rooms

Hello,

I have some good news about the cell phone and the rooms. First of all, my cell phone seems to work just fine everywhere in the rooms. It had between 2 and 4 bars everywhere I tested it, which was basically all over. Most of the time it was 3 bars. I was able to carry on a long conversation walking around with it with only very minor occasional garbling.

Secondly, I don't think I mentioned before how cool the rooms are. They have been completely remodeled, so everything is new-- the tables, the chairs, the blackboards, the blinds, the overhead screens. The lighting system is amazingly high-tech, with something like five preprogrammed options and dimmers and the whole works. It's all very nice.

The wireless access points work great, as before. I still haven't located where the net drop is, though there is supposed to be one. I suspect it might be in the Mysterious Locked Cabinet, of which there is one in each room. Who knows what goodies lurk in there. I'll see if I can call up the facilities people at some point and see if I can get a key. I'd think we should be able to, since we have the rooms reserved.

P.S. One weird thing-- the first of the doors to 26-204 has been eliminated, so that now there is a doorway leading to a blank wall. It's pretty funny looking. Resist the urge to walk into it.

P.P.S. Oh yes, by 'overly nuts' on the phone I meant, "Please don't talk constantly for all 9 hours." A few hours' worth of talking should be fine.

That sounds great -- my one question is: "Define overly nuts." Because of course we will need to use the phone quite a bit before 9:00 p.m., calling in answers and whatnot.

Well, it's not like you haven't done this before yourself, so I guess you know the drill. Worse comes to worse, if you think the phone is getting abused before it goes free, we can throw you some expense money to compensate.

Thanks for all the prep work you've done for the team -- we would be lost at sea without you.

Hello,

I can volunteer my cell phone (617-777-3230). I have free nights and weekends, so provided that we don't go overly nuts before Friday at 9pm, it should work out fine.

I'll stop by the rooms some time later this week and see how well it works there. FYI, Verizon typically has the best coverage on campus, and T-Mobile the worst. Cingular and Sprint/Nextel are in the middle. (I have Verizon.)

Oh, right -- remodeled. Well, it sounds like a net gain overall, although the
lack of a land line is a potential bummer. Allrighty -- we need a
volunteer who
can donate a top-notch cell phone to the effort. (We're going to need a
primary
line with which to communicate with Hunt Central.) Prerequisite: Not minding
that 25 different people will be using it over the course of the weekend.
Anybody?

Hello,

Yes, these are the same rooms as last year. As I mentioned before,
they have been *completely remodeled*. They are virtually
unrecognizable. The drawbacks of the remodeling are that the rooms
no longer have a phone jack, and no longer have a door between them.
(They're still adjacent, of course, but now you have to go out in the
hall to get from one to the other. This shouldn't be a big deal
especially since there are no other teams on our floor.)

On the plus side, the furniture is much nicer! The tables weigh less
than 10000 pounds apiece now too, so moving things around should be
easier.

I checked the room inventory, and there are no other rooms with phone
jacks on our floor. In fact there is only one in the whole building,
on the floor below us... I don't know how feasible that would be.

If this is really last year's headquarters... I coulda *sworn* we had a
land line last year, and I don't remember the cord going all over the
place, either, although I could be misremembering. Anyway, who can give us
the straight scoop on our options? Carol? Mike?

Well, we got last year's rooms, 26-204 and 26-210. That room doesn't have
a phone jack, according to previous posts. We are definitely not above
running a long phone cord out the window to another room for a land line.
Is there any nearby unused room we could jack-jack?
