Re: [Palindrome] new archive password

I could scarcely believe my eyes when I read all my email yesterday
morning.

This list was intentionally set up to be accessible publicly. Ken
explicitly said so recently when someone pointed it out. So someome
comes along and subscribes to the list with his *REAL* email address
and fails to answer his email, and this is akin to packet sniffing
and breaking into people's computers?!?!

Disgusting.

Either you want a public list or you don't. Don't make it public then
accuse someone of practically being criminal for using it as a public
list. Make up your mind. If not answering your email is criminal, I
should've been in the slammer 10 years ago.

Never mind that aside from getting overreacting email messages, I
can't see what harm having the people running the hunt on your list
might be. Heck, in 1993, my team told the organizers what our zephyr
class was (which is analogous to a non-public chat room), and I don't
think any harm came of it. They already *have* the answers!

I did not participate on this team in the Mystery Hunt this year, and
I will not ever do so again. Frankly, I've been nearly personally
insulted by some of what's gone over this list. For all practical
purposes with regard to this team, I *am* an MIT student. I have
friends on the team which ran it this year. And amittai is *far* from
the first person to send an overreacting message to this list.

Let me make this simple by removing all the politics. Unless you are
currently a student or staff at MIT, you are A GUEST. MIT is not
public property. You are a guest of MIT and the *current* students,
especially those running the hunt. You are using MIT resources:
electricity, heat, network infrastructure and bandwidth (which has
actually been scarce in the not-too distant past even if it isn't
now), classrooms, and bathrooms. Somebody is paying for those things,
and it's not you.

If I had a party at my house, and one of my guests showed up and
proclaimed that I was running the party all wrong because my party
wasn't exactly like theirs, I would *KICK THEM OUT* of my
house. Frankly I think it reflects well on the people running this
year's hunt that they still bent over backwards, AFAICT, to make the
hunt good for you.

I'm leaving this mailing list, despite the fact that I'd have liked
to be able to see people on this team again, especially those who I
met on the team. But I am sick and tired of getting email on this
list which makes me this upset. It makes the Mystery Hunt far from
"fun".
