Re: [Palindrome] network connectivity

Status update: I got in touch with a friend in the Network group, and
we have permission to use the switch. (Ken: It is *not* a repeater,
right? Just a hub/switch?) We will probably still need to get a static
IP for the printer, but computers connected via the hub will be able to
acquire DHCP addresses just as easily as the laptops with wireless.

Some friendly reminders about security: MIT is a *very* tempting target
for crackers, so please make secure, encrypted connections (e.g., use
SSH instead of telnet) to remote systems whenever possible. And if you
have a Windows system, please patch it to make sure you've got the most
recent software updates. I assure you that the statistics on how
quickly Windows viruses spread around campus last year are truly scary,
and my friend in Network will probably not be pleased with us if we
reintroduce a problem.

And for those of us on the Mac, it can't hurt to run Software Update as
well; there were several critical security updates late last year.
