Dear All,
I have signed up for the Faculty Seminar advising option for Fall 2008. However, I have a problem with the first meeting in August, as I will be out of the country from August 26 - September 2, 2008. I am scheduled to pick up the students's folders on August 22, I can do that. I will also meet with my orientation leaders on August 25th, and will try to give them enough information about my seminar ("Getting familiar with 4-dimensional world or spacetime") so they could answer at least most of student's questions. I will contact my advisees my email explaining that I'll be absent on the August 27th, this is where I need your help: 1) could someone come to meet with my advisees and my orientation leaders in the afternoon on August 26th? I will, of course, resume all my duties after I am back on September 2, 2008. 2) my advisees will need help with their registering for courses, their registration time is on Saturday, August 30; I was supposed to make appointments with them on Friday, August 29th. Of course, if they are not sure what to chose, they could make changes to their course selection after I am back, and I'll be helping with that
Please let me know whether you could help, as soon as possible, let me know even if you cannot, I talked to pre-major advising office and they will help if I don't find it myself with regards Krzysztof
ps I am enclosing the letter from Tufts Orientation office, and the abstract of my seminar
"GETTING FAMILIAR WITH 4-DIMENSIONAL WORLD or SPACETIME"
summary and textbook:
A translation of an address by H. Minkowski, delivered at the 80th Assembly of German Natural Scientists and Physicians, at Cologne, 21 September 1908 (will be provided to the students). The opening paragraph reads:
The views of space and time which I wish to lay before you have sprung from the soil of experimental physics, and therein lies their strength. They are radical. Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality.
course plan:
i Introduction to special theory of relativity "Minkowski's world" - 4-dimensional space-time, light cones et cetera ii Consequencies, tests; paradoxes ? Is our world really like this ? iii 4-vectors iv Lorentz invariants v Elementary introduction to elementary particles, fundamental interactions and their carriers
prerequisites: NONE, elementary knowledge of algebra, geometry, some common sense and ability to think
![]() | Online Community for Entering Students | | | | | Dear Krzysztof:
Thank you very much for agreeing to serve as a pre-major advisor to a group of Liberal Arts students entering Tufts in the fall. You will be the pivotal academic contact working individually with these students as they plan their first semester of college. Your advisor folder (containing information pertinent to pre-major advising) and your advisee folders (containing information about each incoming student) will be available on August 22, 2008 at the Student Services desk in Dowling Hall. Laura Doane will send you an email regarding distribution of those folders in the upcoming weeks. At the bottom of this email, please find a report outlining your advising group information. This includes a list of your advisees with permanent addresses and the summer contact information for the Orientation Leaders (OLs) assigned to assist you with your advising group.
I encourage you to write to your advisees before they arrive on campus. This Tufts tradition assures incoming students that they will receive concerned counsel about their academic programs from the beginning of their college careers. If you are leading a Faculty Seminar or CAP course, you may also take this opportunity to introduce students to your topic and suggest ways they can prepare for the fall.
Please reserve the evening of Wednesday, August 27th to meet with your advising group. Your advisees will have their first meeting with you and the Orientation Leaders at 5PM on that date. Information about the location of the meeting will be in your advisor folder. At that meeting, you might want to schedule your advising appointments. Please make arrangements with your Orientation Leaders in advance. After the 5PM meeting, you are invited to attend the first-night celebration in the Gantcher Convocation Center with your advisees.
Your Orientation Leaders have been asked to contact you at your Tufts phone extension and/or e-mail address. However, some of you may be away from campus during much of late July or August, making it difficult to reach you. If this is the case, please try to get in touch with your Orientation Leaders before the August 27th meeting and dinner. Your Orientation Leaders will be the major link between you and your advisees during Orientation; their ability to facilitate the advising process will be based largely on the information you provide.
In preparation for your pre-major advising responsibilities, there will be an advisor training session on Tuesday, August 26th at 2PM, location TBD. Please feel free to bring your advisees' folders to the workshop so we can address specific issues you may have about your advisees.
You will find the following information from Laurie Sabol, Library Instruction Coordinator, useful to you and your students. The Tisch Library Research Paper Navigator (http://www.library.tufts.edu/researchpaper/) provides help with time management, research, writing and citing sources for the research papers. Other useful resources for pre-major advisors can be found at http://www.library.tufts.edu/tisch/ra/premajor.htm and http://ase.tufts.edu/undergradeducation/advising.asp.
In the meantime, do not hesitate to contact the Orientation Office at x74678 or orientation ase tufts edu.
Sincerely, Kate M. Nash Program Dirctor of Advising & Scholarships
