I run Linux (AntiX 19, kept reasonably up to date).  On this system, both 
Geeqie and Gimp handle heic files with aplomb.

Viewing Dean's pic was a bit inconvenient though. My web browser, Waterfox 
Classic, said "Huh. Wuzzat?  Here, I'll download it, and YOU can figure it 
out." 

So I agree with Ken that it's better to convert or export photos to a 
standard format that all browsers know, such as good old jpeg.

I also recommend posting photos on *open* (no login required) filre 
sharing 
websites, rather than attaching them to discussion list messages.

My favorite such critter is postimages dot org.  I'm sure there are others 
that are equally good.

As for Dean's brace itself, it looks pretty darn sturdy.
