(ET) ER8-36 differential

Actually a New Idea R-36 rider, but essentially the same.  I seem to have 
a 
failed differential.  The chain turns the large sprocket on the axle but 
the axle, she no go.  

Anyone have any experience with a similar failure?  Advice?  Suggestions?  
Any chance it might be just a shear pin?  I haven't torn into it yet.
