(ET) It's the compensating field

Took apart the E20 motor and checked again. The armature does not short to ground on any of the commutator bars (good) however when I connect to the parallel field it does short (bad). It also seems to engage the magnet when done on the stud side, so the fault may be on the return wire that goes to the brushes.

On the good news front there is no short from any of the field windings to ground or from the two wires that go to the internal circuit breaker (does anyone know which wires are for the field and which are for the breaker?)

So what now? Is it possible to take apart the series field, does anyone have a breakdown picture of a fully disassembled E20 motor, and any thoughts on fixing this? It's not a problem except that the chassis is always hot and if a second component faults there are some really weird effects....

Thanks!
Chris
