David is right, with a lot of extra info in there. I have purchased a few of these meters that you're talking about.


The shunt should be on the negative cable before the first battery, not between. I believe they use one of the shunt wires for powering the meter also (common/negative). With this mind, make sure you place the positive power wire accordingly, either on positive of first battery for 6V or second battery for 12V. Follow the diagram that came with it and you should be fine, although i have had to switch the wires on the shunt to get positive current on the meter before. 


I have replaced a few old analog meters on battery chargers with these cheap digital ones. The one i bought was for outdoor use and with a little cable work to connect the shunt, they are a nice upgrade to an old charger.


I would only suggest the shunt be "behind" the fuse protection, so that if too much current is drawn, you don't burn up the shunt before the fuse/breaker trips.

I am looking for a bit of electrical engineering expertise this evening.  My son is converting the single 12 Volt battery on his camping trailer to two 6 volt Trojan deep cycles like I have in my Elec Trak.  He purchased one of those $8.00 China made hard wired digital volt meters to install to see how much current draw he has while "primitive" camping before needing to hook up to his generator for recharge.  There are four small wires coming from the 
 meter which he has fingered out. Now it's a matter of where in line to place the shunt itself. His wiring diagram shows it in line on the negative side. This probably is okay as far as the shunt is concerned I'm just wondering because the shunt is rated at 6 VDC if he will get erratic readings by placing it in the 12 VDC feed. Conversely if placed it between the two battery's you would get readings from only one battery if my thinking is correct.
