I agree, David:  when I was testing alternators (Prestolite) we ran them 
at up to 10,000 RPM at full rated ( or available) output, lead to load 
bank was 0000 welding cable with a 50 mv shunt to read output voltage.  
Had about 20 stands running 24/365, we were looking for about 7000 Hrs 
MTBF.  I used the heat output from the load bank to heat part of the 
plant in the winter ;-) .
