Stiffer might not be better. Also I'd be mounting to the back of the 
tractor, actually the best way might be to mount to the rear tiller bar. 
That's connected to both the rear bar and straight to the axle so most 
of the load is born by the transmission and wheels.

Not a bad way to go actually.
