I've noticed that it is indeed better to just leave the motors  
running or engineer sweep turns to keep mowing steady.  It also makes  
for a more finished look to the grass, especially if grass is thicker  
and misses a few blades, you can just sweep over those rough cut  
areas while turning.

 I do believe it is beneficial to shut off mower if turning takes  
longer than about 5 to 10 seconds or you have to stop and back up for  
next cut.

But we can all be a bit over fanatical with these thought provoking  
machines and energy consumptive behavior, at least comparing to  
gasoline powered machines.
