My putty knife, which hangs on a ped in my tractor storage shed is one of
those 25 cent plastic ones that does a lousy jog with putty but a great
job with grass sludge on my deck. I even sanded the corners to match the

Do not use a metal putty knife, if you scratch the paint then it will rust
for sure. I use a rubber spatula or a stick.
All of this only works if you have good paint on the deck. If it's bare
metal then keep water and wet grass away from the deck.

I agree with John, I was always told never to wash a deck out with water
as it causes corrosion with the nutrients in the grass clippings. Scrap
out the clippings with a putty knife after they have dried somewhat.
