My 1 cent:
If you remove all the wiring, redo it with teflon insulated silver plated 
wire (available on ebay) in various colors. The teflon won't be affected by 
acid or anything else, and the silver plating protects the wire suprisingly 
well from corrosion.

Remove all wiring and start from scratch. Know where each and every wire
goes.
