I neglected to mention that usable NiMH batteries are virtually 
unavailable, 
regardless of price.  Ovonics (now Cobasys, a joint venture with - ahem - 
Chevron Oil) controls the licensing of NiMH technology.  They refuse to 
license anyone to build NiMH batteries in a size or capacity usable in a 
battery EV.  Only one company, Gold Peak, has a license which allows it to 
build large NiMH batteries, and that's because they purchased the license 
before the restriction was added.
