Eighteen amps is extremely high.  This could be caused by failed (shorted)
rectifiers, a shorted capacitor, or even a damaged transformer.  I'm
speculating here though, not speaking from experience, because I've never
even used the factory charger in my ET.

Maybe you have a short circuit after all - in addition to your intermittent
open.   ;-)
