(ET) compaction

IIRC, the major cause of compaction in plowed fields is the pressure 
from the moldboard plow bottoms.  The way to cure it is to break it up 
with what is called a 'subsoiler".

On my garden, i plant buckwheat late in the summer, till it in in the 
spring.  I do till as deep as the et tiller will go.

Just wondering, are you going to chemically kill the sod before tilling 
the lawn ?
