I thought that was what the handle on the front was for.  I just grab it 
and 
pull, and the deck flips up for cleaning.  I've never needed to adjust the 
lift or move the tractor.  I wouldn't say it was a strain on my back, and 
I'm pretty much a feeb.  ;-)

That's one of the things I like about the front mowers - easy to clean.

Maybe yours is an older design?
