There are lots of ways to weld plastic and a good source of information on some of them is; http://www.urethanesupply.com/kcwelder.html Heat fusion welding can be done with direct heating using a soldering iron or the purpose built tools that also have a guide to feed in the filler rod. Some people prefer the hot air gun for heating to weld the plastic and there are guns made specifically for plastic welding. Solvent welding is very easy and strong as long as the material will disolve in solvent and you make good joints. If you want to try it on the cheap, many of the tools and materials are available from Harbor Freight. Not the highest quality tools but not the full professional tool price either. Any major plastic supplier will have all the tools, materials and information you need. TAP Plastics jumps to mind but there are many and it can help to shop locally if you can. The people will often give great advice and direction for free and you can get lots of 'scrap' material very cheap or free to practice on. Just for a point of information. The battery boxes on most boats and small ships are made of plywood covered in fiberglass. michael On 6/12/06, Neil Dennis <wombatt gmail com> wrote:
Used to be, we could buy plastic rod for fusion welding (repairing snowmobile hoods) that you melted into the crack with a hot iron, done right it made a solid joint. I also used to buy "heater' rods for building test equipment somewhere, would be good for bending . wombat
