At least 100 A especially since the PM motor is just "thrown across the line"
with no starting resistance present.
As far as
the diode, whatever RadioShack® still has on the shelf will work just dandy. One
, three or ten amp silicon diodes will work just swell . Just make sure that the
PIV is somewhat greater than 36 volts, you'll be good to go.

current rating on the 'L Contactor' used as the main motor
control?
What are the
spec's and or rating of the diode used between the PTO switch and the PTO
relay (seems mine is in very small pieces now)
