Honestly you could just use a set of wire wound resistors (small) toweaken the field. The only issue is that you need a shunt on thearmature circuit and a small trimmer app to close a relay bypassing theresistors if the armature current was too high.

Look at the Elec-trak E20 card 4 schematics for how to do this. Notcomplicated.
