Actually - and you power specialty guys can add more specifics - it is
basically a 36V motor driving a 110V generator.  I went the
electronics/computer route as my specialty within electric engineering
in college, but I vaguely remember doing something like that in one of
the power labs.

Others can explain it better but it is basically an 36 volt to 110 volt
converter.
