Mine was doing that too!

It had a bad connection on the control card for the field 
weakening circuit. So the field would weaken and I would 
accellerate rapidly then the weakening would drop out and I would 
decellerate rapidly. i.e. bucking

When the belts were loose it didn't jerk, it just didn't get going 
very quickly and I could hear them squealing. I dont think it is 
possible to overtighten the drive belts, unless you used a large 
pry bar.   

Both were simple fixes.
