Could use some advice on fixing a steering problem.

Bought an E12 in good condition but the steering wheel skips whenturning hard to either side. Removed panel below dash and followed roddown below steering wheel to a gear that meshes with a fan shaped gearthat moves the front wheels.Is there a way to adjust this fan closer to the gear so that it doesn'tpop past?
