A linear actuator strikes me as an excellent idea for some applications - like a dozer blade where downforce or a "locked" height might be desirable.  However, for a front mounted mower lift, it is probably not the best choise since the strap lift allows the mower to "float" or rise over mounds or banks, while a linear actuator (providing no "float") may attempt to force it into the ground.

All this talk about the front lift makes me wonder why we want to keep them. I have nothing but problems with mine and it is slow. I have purchased a 36 volt 18" linear actuator (used for a satelite dish) for $50.00. I will let you know how it installs and works as I get on with it.
