(ET) Just a small fire..

Hi
Just a small fire.. I've started to work on the  B 145. I have the 
electrics
out and on the bench. When I had a good look at it the varistor was broken
of (or though I thought) so I replaced it. Hooked up the batteries and the
varistor melted. I guess it was melted before, not broken. Suggestions?
