Yeah, but at what price?  When we first came up with 'Insta-Clear' (a now 
defunct option that melted the ice off your windshield with a thin layer 
of metal... I had it and it worked) we tested the alternator at 
'full-field' without load.  The typical 85A Motocraft (now Visteon) 
alternator would dump 70V (!?!) to a high resistance.  Don't put that 
against your battery folks!  Then to, I know it wouldn't be able to put 
out 70V against that low a resistance, but I'm sure the damage would be 
swift.  Cheap regulation often depends on the load as well as the 
electronics.

No reason you can't use a 6 or a 12 volt charger, but if they are usual
"home ty[e" charge rate will be pretty slow.

In desperation, you could even charge off your cars alternator -
probably get more amps (:-)
