Re: (ET) newbie questions

Jim,
The "Evil Noises" you mention sound kind of like what I have experienced
with my E-20. With mine, when the gear shifter was in LL, L, or D1 - I
would
hear what sounded like a rattling kind of noise coming from what I thought
was the transmission when moving - especially at faster speeds. The noise
was not present in D2 (very smooth sounding in that gear). I changed the
trans fluid and put the 64 oz back in that is required. I just jacked the
back end up with a floor jack - with batteries in. There didn't seem to be
a
problem with leaking or anything. I thought this might be the problem
because I only got about 24 oz out of the transmission, but it wasn't.
Noise
was still there. So, I had my transmission looked at by a local lawn &
garden dealer and instructed him to change certain bearings and seals based
on what Bill Gunn told me. Only one bearing and seal was bad, but $328
later, nothing had changed in the way it sounded and I think it's even
harder to get into the gears now. I next had all the bearings changed in
the
mower deck motors and the drive motor. After getting the motors back on the
ET - guess what? No more grinding noise! The problem was in the drive motor
bearings - not the transmission after all. What an expensive lesson
learned!! Things aren't always as they appear to be.
I don't know if this is your problem or not, but I guess I would change the
motor bearings first. They most likely need it after 30+ years and it costs
nothing in comparison to what it cost for the transmission - $20 (actually
I
think I was robbed, but since I don't know anything about that sort of work
I had to trust someone else to do it).
So, I hope this helps - good luck!
Don Cohen
