Actually I prefer silicone spray for that purpose. It doesn't leave any
film that can attract dirt; WD-40 seems to. For all that, the film WD-40
leaves isn't very durable when you want it to be. I used to try using it
to rustproof metal, with very little noticeable effect.
For loosening rusty bolts, I use Liquid Wrench.
I haven't used any in quite a few years, and I don't know if it's even
still made, but I used to have good results with LPS as a penetrant and
rust inhibitor.
