I'm certainly no expert on these matters, but I wonder if it might make 
sense to OCR the text and scan the illustrations.  Full page scans take 
lots of storage, and they're not searchable.  

Under this plan, I think Acrobat becomes more practical, but I'm not 
sure.  The downside is the additional labor involved in proofing the OCR 
output, and placing the illustrations correctly.
