Goodness, that is sad.  Alan was part of Massachusetts bellringing for my whole ringing life.  I didn't know him well, so the memories are just snippets of things, like the harpsichord in his upstairs apartment in the 1980s. A discussion of how he and his brother picked out presents for each other.  How to ring despite the arthritis in his thumb.  Not a coherent story I could tell, really.

Dear Smith ringers,

I have sad news to share: I've just heard that Alan Durfee passed away last
night.

Alan was a stalwart of the Smith tower; I believe that he's the only ringer
to have been a local member of every iteration of the Smith band, from 1968
onwards. His first peal, Plain Bob Major
<https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1594124> at Groton in 1968, was
the first peal for the North American Guild. He was essential in helping us
rebuild the band in 2013, and was a positive and colorful presence in the
tower for several more years; after 2018 his health no longer permitted him
to ring in tower, but he continued to attend online & handbell practices
for several years more.

If any of you have stories of Alan, I'd love to hear them. He will be
greatly missed.
