In the comments of the first vid he said it's just being controlled by Abel and not (yet) responding to conductor calls. So it's literally playing back the pre-programmed method, so yeah, it's the humans that have to adjust pace.
As a first pass it's really a mechanical project with an interface to an existing piece of software (no mean feat in itself!) however it sounds like he's got plans to make it more reactive.
