MIT Seminar Room: 3-270, Host: Nick Fang
Abstract
Taking advantage of macroscopic quantum phenomena and/or employing
artificially engineered materials, one can construct devices that exhibit
properties that are not typically found in nature. In this talk, I will
first describe a matter wave interferometer whose operation is based on
the counter-intuitive quantum phenomena of superfluid Josephson
oscillations and discuss its novel application as an absolute rotation
sensor. I will then describe the use of artificial materials with
prescribed variation in constitutive parameters to manipulate the path of
energy propagation. In particular, I will discuss the manipulation of dc
magnetic fields with a hybrid structure of superconducting and
soft-ferromagnetic elements and controlling heat conduction with an
anisotropic composite made of layers of conventional isotropic materials.
