GALAXIES AND THE COSMIC FRONTIER

This website is intended to complement and extend the book
Galaxies and the Cosmic Frontier
by William H. Waller and Paul W. Hodge,
copyright 2003 Harvard University Press www.hup.harvard.edu.

The "Tadpole" Galaxy and many other more distant galaxies
(Hubble Space Telescope, STScI, AURA, NASA)

Besides updates and corrections, an extensive set of technical notes is presented. Together with the non-technical book, the notes provide sufficient quantitative and formulaic information for an intermediate-level undergraduate course on galaxies and cosmology. The syllabus for such a course, as recently taught at Tufts University, is available in the following formats:

CORRECTIONS:

If you find any errors in the book, technical notes, or updates, please contact Dr. William Waller at waller@cosmos.phy.tufts.edu.

UPDATES:

This section is an attempt to keep up with the most important advances in our understanding of galaxies, and the cosmic frontier.

TECHNICAL NOTES:

Stellar, nebular, galaxian, and cosmological properties are tabulated, formulated, and discussed at a level that assumes a working knowledge of algebra and some acquaintance with calculus.

PHYSICAL AND ASTRONOMICAL QUANTITIES:

A listing of measurement conversions, physical constants, and frequently used astronomical quantities.

LINKS TO JOURNALS AND WEBSITES:

A selection of links pertinent to the topic of galaxies and cosmology.
